MARCH MATness!

Friends!

Welcome to MARCH! New month, same us - whee!

I'm excited because March means SPRING. March 20th marks the vernal equinox and, with it, nature's green light to move forward on considerable growth and transformation. Whatever you've been toiling over in the darkness this winter can begin to see the light of day come spring. Some folks make New Year’s Resolutions but I’ve always found the time between now and the summer solstice to be the most fertile. Telling myself in the dead of winter, “This year, I’m going to build a cathedral!” seems like an act of insanity but saying it as we spring forward sounds more like a positive challenge.

This might be part of what fueled March MATness, a funny and informative movement on social media embraced by Pilates practitioners across the globe; teachers and fans alike post on Instagram and Facebook to celebrate the groundbreaking work of Joseph Pilates, one of the great movement and body thinkers of the 20th century. I’ve been teaching Pilates for 7 years now, practicing it for 2x that, and I'm grateful every day that this work exists. I get a contact high just from looking at all the fun pics of Pilates nerds around the world posting images of themselves doing their version of the Hundred, a classical exercise. Could something like this happen in winter? Maybe. But it seems a lot more likely to happen with the seasonal shift - folks crawling out of their caves (or returning from a summer sojourn, if they are in the Southern Hemisphere) and sharing a desire to move, to stretch, and to strengthen with one another.

And so I’ll talk a bit about Pilates this month, projects I’ve been toiling over this winter will be revealed, and wild proclamations for you to go forth are inevitable.

What will you create this spring, friend? I cannot wait to find out.

- P.
